Christmas Projects: Make Your Own Christmas Stocking

This Christmas, make your own Christmas stockings! This is probably one of the easiest Christmas projects you can make…

What You Will Need:

Decorations: (just some ideas)

Making the Stocking:
  1. Fold your felt sheet into two.
  2. Lay your Christmas stocking pattern over your felt sheet and pin it down.
  3. Cut out your Christmas stocking following the pattern outline.
  4. If you want to hand-stitch the white cuff to your stocking, you should attach that first before sewing your stocking together. Otherwise, move on to step 5 now. My sewing is pretty crappy so I think it looks neater if you just stick the white cuff on instead of sewing it on (see the red stocking below versus the green stocking).
  5. Stitch your Christmas stocking together with the Chenille needle and embroidery floss, using blanket stitch (click the link to watch a video if you don’t know how it’s done). For contrast, I used a different coloured embroidery floss to the felt – red embroidery floss on the green stocking and green embroidery floss on the red stocking.
  6. If you sewed on your white cuff, you can skip this step. Otherwise, cut a band of white felt and attach it to the top of your stocking.

Decorating the stocking:

This is the fun part. Actually, no instructions are really required here. It all depends on how creative your want to be. Here’s one I made:

Before you get overly critical – yes, I realise my blanket stitch is wrong but I figure my boys weren’t really going to notice so I didn’t bother fixing it.

Of course, you could also go out and buy a fancy Christmas stocking that would look way cooler and nicer than this, but where’s the fun in that?

Alternatively, you could also get yourself one of these cool Christmas Stocking kits by Bucilla and have a cool home-made Christmas stocking (but I strongly suspect that good sewing skills – which I lack – are required).
