Educational Programs: BrainPop

What is BrainPop?

BrainPop is an animated educational program for kids covering various topics under Science, Health, Technology, Math, Social Studies, Arts & Music and English. The content is communicated through movies, and retention is reinforced with quizzes and activity pages.

BrainPop covers material appropriate for children across all ages from Kindergarten through Secondary school. BrainPop caters to children in Kindergarten to Year 3 with a special edition called BrainPop Junior. At the end of the movie, your child can take an easy quiz or hard quiz to see how much information she can remember.

What we thought

I heard about BrainPop some time back but I hesitated getting the subscription because I didn’t want to subscribe to something we weren’t going to use. When I found out about the BrainPop Apps, I downloaded them for the boys. I initially did not intend to purchase the subscription but I noticed that Hercules was consistently watching videos so I bit the bullet and bought the in-app subscription for the app. I must say it was a great decision. Hercules loves watching these videos and since he started watching the videos, Aristotle’s interest has been piqued. Now he, too, enjoys watching the BrainPop series.

I thought the subject coverage was pretty good. We’ve only really covered BrainPop Junior so I can’t comment on the BrainPop content. I especially liked that they covered content such as internet safety, bullying, etc. The only downside is that the Social Studies content is too American-centric for us. Other than that, the BrainPop apps make a nice supplement to what the boys are learning at school without being too heavy-handed about it.
