I’ve been down and out lately. It appears the nasal congestion I have been experiencing lately isn’t due to my sinuses but a little bug that Gavin picked up from school and passed on to me. It became evident when it spread to my throat.
I’ve been surviving with the nasal congestion without having to take anything for it. The throat itchiness, however, took on a whole new dimension this morning when I couldn’t stop coughing. Since pregnant women aren’t supposed to take cough medicine, I pretty much had to endure it until I remembered reading something about chocolate being a cough suppressant. The details were rather hazy, so I decided to google it.
Looks like this pregnant brain isn’t completely useless after all. I did remember correctly. Chocolate is a good cough suppressant. In fact, it’s even better than codeine – 33% more effective. And codeine is better than the usual cough suppressant dextromethorphan. In other words, if you want to suppress that cough, the best thing to have is chocolate – seriously.
The question now is – what kind of chocolate and how much?
Apparently, it is theobromine in chocolate that helps to suppress the cough. Theobromine is present in milk and dark chocolate, but it is present in much higher quantities in dark chocolate. So if you want an effective cough suppressant, you’re better off eating dark chocolate rather than milk chocolate.
As for how much you need, the study used 2 ounces (about 55g) of dark chocolate per dose. This has been shown to be effective in suppressing coughs for up to four hours.
So I tried that this morning. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any dark chocolate on me, but I did have some milk chocolate. Was it the placebo effect or did I really notice an improvement to that nagging itch at the back of my throat that was making me cough? Because my throat stopped itching and I did stop coughing.
Unfortunately, a chocolate cough suppressant doesn’t do much for my pregnancy weight gain which has been a little on the high side of late and much to the doctor’s concern, but more about that in another post. The point is, chocolate works as a cough suppressant and it’s safe for me to use during pregnancy.
The other good news is that it’s also safe for the kids to use…
