The boys had their annual eye examination. G2’s hyperopia appears to be slowly correcting itself. G1, unfortunately, has developed mild myopia. Although it is not significant enough to warrant getting him glasses, I am concerned. While myopia has been linked to hereditary genes, there is research to support its prevention by spending more time outdoors.
According to Aamodt and Wang, the authors of “Welcome to Your Child’s Brain“, the “bright outdoor light helps children’s developing eyes maintain the correct distance between the lens and the retina — which keeps vision in focus. Dim indoor lighting doesn’t seem to provide the same kind of feedback. As a result, when children spend too many hours inside, their eyes fail to grow correctly and the distance between the lens and retina becomes too long, causing far-away objects to look blurry.”
So that was what we did…
City Boys on an Urban Trek
I was inspired by Jessy Phuah to take the boys hiking. Not wanting to scare them on their first trek (I didn’t want a mutiny on my hands when they decided they were too tired to walk any farther), I went for something easy – Hutan Simpan Bukit Nanas right in the heart of the city, surrounded by high-rises. It doesn’t get more urban than this…
There are sections of paved walkways, that make the going very easy.
Even the “un-paved” paths are far from challenging.
And should the going get too tough for your newbie hikers, there are a few gardens and scenic rest stops where you can rest for a little while.
The kids will also enjoy exploring the canopy walk.
You can read more about Bukit Nanas on The Rainforest Journal though I must confess that what we saw looked quite different. There appears to be considerable construction work going on so I’m not really sure what’s happening in the area but word on the street is that they’re restoring the old cable car. Hopefully the place will still be as green after they’re done.
